And while in some places like Salt Lake City, gays are a higher proportion of the city because of hate in the surrounding communities, in Atlanta where most of the suburban areas are unincorporated, does not have quite the same organizational power to ghettoize the gays that the Mormons do. Remember, antigay hate is much stronger in the Atlanta area, especially among African-Americans, who are the large majority of the city's population (and 550,000 is way too high an estimate for that). Oh I can believe 13% of Atlanta identifies as LGBT, but the percentages would be higher in these other cities. Gayer than college towns like Madison, Boulder, or, for that matter, Athens, GA? No. Gayer than Boston (which similarly has a small central core)? No.
